Ben’s brace fires Gregorians to title advantage

22/12/2003

GREGORIANS swept back to the top of the Lancashire Amateur League premier division with a 2-0 win over Boltonians.

The return of Neil McKay to the defence added necessary bite in a physical game at Bolton's historic Chapeltown ground.

Bolton, possibly remembering the tetchy previous encounter in October, set out to prevent Gregs' usual pass and move style.

The breakthrough came in a period of outstanding football from Gregs in the second half. Rick Gunby broke up a Bolts attack and sent Ben Twemlow off on a 30-yard run that finished with a blistering shot into the roof of the net.

Minutes later, Ben Fleet put over a cross that Ces Edey nodded back from the far post for Twemlow to hit home his second.

Paul Regan also saw a fine curling drive hit the post, and in one of the many panicky moments in the Bolton rearguard, a defender headed against the inside of the post from a Gregs corner, the ball somehow staying out of the net.

With just 10 games left in the Premiership, the tide has now turned in their favour.
