MANCHESTER Waconians have won the Boys' Under-16 Junior and Schools Lacrosse Tournament.

The Wilmslow Road club defeated a combined Cheadle and Mellor team, the defending champions, 10-9 in overtime at this year's competition in Parrs Wood.

Wacs won all four of their group matches and beat Poynton 8-4 in the semi-finals. Victories cam against Wilmslow (11-4), Timperley (6-2), Heaton Mersey (5-4), and Lancashire side Boardman and Eccles (5-2).

Cheadle/Mellor had defeated Heaton Mersey 4-1 in their semi-final clash and were tipped to retain the title they won last year after a 4-3 victory over Timperley.

Wacs club chairman Eddie Owen has been delighted with the progress his young team have made this season - and holds much hope for the future.

"We've got a very strong junior set-up," said Owen. "There's been a lot of young players in our first team this season, so I think we heading in the right direction.

"I'm delighted for the under-16s team. They've worked hard all season and deserve their success."

Wacs C registered a 10-7 victory over Brooklands Hulmeians B in division five of the Men's North of England League.
